Past month was really fun for me and my family. We had lots of wonderful guests that visited our home. We also traveled to Boone (North Carolina) for a 7 day holistic health workshop. Normally, I manage my Muscular Dystrophy symptoms very carefully with a healthy diet and lifestyle habits. But last month's non-stop excitement took a bit of toll on my right knee and it got inflamed and was unable to bend it much. I tried quite a few "quick fix" holistic things but I didn't get any long term relief. I had read a lot about the healing power of sunlight (Helio-therapy) so I decided to put it to the test.
For the next 21 days, instead of doing my daily "SKY" breathing and Sahaj meditation practice in my room, I sat in the early morning sun with only my shorts on - Not a pretty sight according to my wife and kids :). I exposed the rest of my body (including my inflamed knee) to the early morning rays of sunlight. In just 5 days, I found significant reduction in the inflammation and my pain was reduced to half. In 3 weeks time, my pain and inflammation was reduced by 90%. Needless to say, i wanted to share this with everyone.
The relief that I experienced from the healing rays of the sun is not a unique phenomenon. In fact helio-therapy (exposure to sunlight for healing) has been practiced by many ancient cultures for over 4000 years. Just 100 years back, there were many healing places in US and Europe where helio-therapy was practiced along with a cleansing diet for healing and rejuvenation of the body and mind.
Scientifically speaking, the early morning rays of the sun contains many essential nutrients including vitamin D that aids in healing and regeneration of healthy tissues. It is the regenerative power behind these very rays that helps the plants and trees grow from a tiny seed. being an integral part of this environment, we can also reap the similar benefits by allowing ourselves to be in the morning sunlight.
Physical and mental diseases that can be helped by exposure to early morning sun.
Build Immunity (Perhaps the best benefit of exposure to early morning sunlight is the build up of immunity. Most of the diseases happen because of lack of immunity. Rays of the early morning sun gives us the maximum protection and possibly delay the arrival of many types of chronic illnesses.
Common cold ( exposure to Vitamin D speeds up the recovery from common cold symptoms)
Joint & Muscular pain (exposure to early morning sun is really good for joint and muscular pain. If you are able to do gentle yoga poses /or even stretches its even better.

Depression ( exposure to early morning sunlight releases happiness-promoting hormone serotonin )
Insomnia (By exposing ourselves to Natural form of Vitamin D helps reset our body's natural rhythm. Also walking for 15 minutes under the stars before going to bed helps with insomnia)
Colon / breast cancer. Lack of Vitamin D can play a role in certain types of cancer such as colon, breasts and potentially others as well. By exposing the skin to early morning rays of the sun provides provides long term protection.
* Though rays of the sun provide immense healing benefits, it is not a panacea (Cure all). We must eat a very healthy and clean diet and follow a lifestyle that does not drain us of our precious energy.
