I often get asked if blending is better than juicing (because the fiber is still there). Also, what about the cold weather? can we juice during the winter? They are both valid questions. As for juicing in winter, there is absolutely NO issue as long as you use only those vegetables and fruits that are grown locally and are in season. Think about it, nature doesn't do mistakes - if something is growing in season you can consume it fresh. As for choosing between blending or juicing, they both have their place in overall health. I alternate between juicing and green smoothies, and have seen tremendous health benefits in doing both. I do however suggest adding at least 4 weeks of juicing every 3 -4 months to your daily dietary routine as a way to boost the immune system. As I mentioned before, use the fruits and vegetables that are grown locally during the time of juicing.
Vegetables and fruit Juicing is a fairly recent phenomenon (less than 100 years) as the technology to extract nutrients did not exists before. Juicing was made popular by Dr. Norman Walker ( who cured his cancer with juicing ). Yes, fiber is important and we should get plenty of it by eating seasonal fruits, vegetables, lentils beans and whole grains ( in this order ).
Benefits of Fresh Vegetable juices:
Fresh vegetable juices provide the body with a broad spectrum of concentrated nutrients including minerals, trace minerals, phyto-chemicals, antioxidants, chlorophyll, enzymes etc which can potentially help in eliminating or lowering overall toxicity thus allowing the body to heal itself.
The process of Juicing keeps the soluble fiber intact and removes most of the insoluble fiber from the fruits and vegetables. What remains is the high quality minerals, vitamins and distilled water that are then easily absorbed into the bloodstream through the gut walls (within minutes). These minerals and vitamins play an important role in healing / regenerating the different organs and systems from within.
. Different vegetables and fruits are linked with healing and restoring certain parts of the body. Beets and dandelion greens are great for liver and the quality of blood. Vegetable like celery, mustard greens, kale & chard are great for the bone and muscle health due to their high mineral content. Cilantro is great for heavy metal removal. Certain greens like broccoli, spinach, and wheat-grass are also high in proteins as well. Juicing is specially helpful in the winter months as it helps preventing or aid in quick recovery from common cold symptoms.
Imp: Juicing can also be used as an extremely powerful healing or preventative tool when used correctly and therapeutically in large dosage. However, one should consult an experienced health practitioner while attempting to add juicing as a therapy.
Good Resources for juicing: One must learn to correctly prepare fresh juices to enhance their healing potential. The best book on juicing that I found was written by Dr. Normon Walker - who lived to be either 99 or 104 years of age and is considered to be the founder of modern juicing. He not only healed himself of serious health issues but also helped many thousands heal themselves.
I also recommend watching juicing videos of Jay Kordich (AKA Juice Daddy) on you tube. He brought juicing to main stream America in 1980's and was still juicing at the ripe age of 89. He was yet another man who was diagnosed with cancer in his early twenties and he healed himself by following a serious juicing and cleansing therapy regiment.
Other therapies such as "Gerson Therapy" have also been found to be very effective in treating several types of cancers and other serious health issues mainly through extended juicing regiment.
Conclusion:
The vegetable and fruit juices should always be made fresh. Avoid using canned or bottled juices as most of them are pasteurized thus lacking health enhancing enzymes and other quality nutrients.
