A green smoothie is an excellent meal replacement or a post workout choice especially if one is thinking about regaining their health. A typical green smoothie has at least one type of leafy greens and one sweet fruit to balance the sweetness. This is a great "Starter" green smoothie that is so easy to prepare and can be introduced to kids or even adults.
Ingredients:
1 large Ripe Banana (or 2 medium bananas)
12-14 Oz clean/filtered water or coconut water
Two handfuls of baby spinach or one small head of lettuce
2-3 pitted dates
Instructions:
Wash the greens thoroughly. Add all the ingredients in the blender (greens first). Blend it on low for 10-15 seconds and then on high for 40-45 seconds (till everything is liquefied). Do not run the blender for too long as it will heat-up the contents of the smoothie and destroy some of the live enzymes that are a key to its nutrition and health benefits.
It is very important to use bananas that are very RIPE. The banana that is ripe has brown spotted skin and is slightly soft to touch.
Tip: It is a good idea to buy bananas in bulk (If you get a better deal). If you see them ripening faster than you can use them, simply peel the skin and store them in the refrigerator in a ziplock bag. This way, you have access to ripe bananas all the time.
Note: This smoothie can easily fill a 16 - 20 oz jar. If planning to store, keep it in the refrigerator in a glass jar with a tight lid to avoid oxidation. This smoothie can easily last for up-to 36 hours. Play around with the recipe till you find the happy mix of greens and sweetness.
